The Walker County Political Accountability Coalition was formed as a non-partisan Alabama political action committee in Jasper, Ala., as a means of ensuring more accountability from local, state and federal government officials. It is run by a citizen board of directors, with no politicians allowed on the board. WCPAC was first created in response to the out-of-control growth of electronic bingo in Walker County, which had allowed to operate unchecked since early 2007. Going in 2009, the coalition is still fighting that battle as its first priority, citing the social and economic damage that it is expected to bring to northwest Alabama. The group, which endorsed candidates for county offices in 2008, is hoping to widen its influence on other topics. The group will be opposing any efforts to legalize alcohol sales in Walker County as a follow-up to electronic bingo, and it will push for more treatment of gambling addictions and the establishment of a Gamblers Anonymous-type organization in the county. WCPAC will also advocate ways to fight illegal drugs and drug abuse, as well as the abuse of children, spouses and seniors. The coalition will be endorsing candidates for the 2010 races and is eager to talk to any candidate supporting its agenda. |
